Canceled - To be Rescheduled...

A Message from our Executive Director at Esalen

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let you know that although spring has sprung on the Big Sur coast and the skies have cleared, at Esalen we continue to feel and navigate the ongoing and deep impact of this year’s devastating winter weather. Our current situation is unprecedented in our history, and is challenging us in ways we could have never anticipated. As the new leader of Esalen, I have had to make some very hard decisions in the past weeks.

I have to share with you...

On Monday I learned from Cal Trans that Highway 1 south will not be open to the public in early June as we had hoped. This means there is still no easy access to our property and we remain largely isolated. Out of concern for our guests and faculty, we do not want to risk last-minute cancellations due to changing and unstable road conditions. Effective immediately, we are announcing a new re-open date of July 28th, 2017.

In this moment, I find myself comforted by one thing - trust. I trust in the resilience of Esalen. I trust in the amazing capacity of our community members to support each other, to thrive, to bounce back, and to live our mission of advancing the edge of human potential. I trust that as we move forward, the infinite wisdom of the universe that brought us here will ultimately reveal itself.

In gratitude,
Ben Tauber

There are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them. -- Vicki Baum

Joy is our birthright.  We are designed to experience pleasure, and will often go to great lengths to achieve it.  However, have you ever noticed how easy it is to drift to the one negative comment in a sea of positive responses? To dwell on one doubt in the face of overwhelming support? Yes, we are designed to experience pleasure but our survival has been dependent on perceiving and predicting the dangers in our world. Our brains have what neuropsychologist call a “negativity bias”.

For this reason, it is of paramount importance that we practice embodying the full spectrum of human joy. We must teach ourselves happiness again and again to counter balance evolutions survival directive

In Open Floor Movement practice we investigate the emotion of embodied joy thru a continuum from primary simple delight to complex expressions of happiness to transcendent joy; the kinds of joy that transcend one’s own personal gain, like generosity compassion, peace, exultation and benevolence.

Dancing is the perfect medium and our dancing companions the perfect motivation for developing our capacity to tolerate the ‘big hits’ of rapture or ecstasy, and noticing – and nurturing – the quieter forms of joy, such as presence, health, connection, belonging, kindness, ease, and well-being.

All of these particular qualities of joy have had and can have imprints with in our being. We can strengthen these neural pathways – we can dance ourselves in to being happier more easy going people – at least more of the time.
