A short biography of John Daido Loori (June 14, 1931—October 9, 2009) who was a prominent American Zen teacher, prolific author and avid photographer who established the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen. A Dharma heir of the late Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi-roshi, Daido Loori served as abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery (ZMM) in the Catskills of New York until his death from lung cancer in October of 2009. Zen Mountain Monastery is among a handful of remaining monastic training sites for Zen practitioners in the United States.
