Thirty years ago I stepped onto the dance floor with Gabrielle Roth; thus began my dancing path that has led me to Open Floor. For 20 years I taught 5Rhythms® and when the Open Floor organization was created, I knew that Open Floor’s blend of varied somatic practices and moving meditation was where my body and soul aligned. At the same time that I was teaching dance, I also got my M.A. in counseling and did a lot of work centering around trauma and attachment. I became a psychotherapist and a movement therapist and have had a private practice for over 23 years. This combination of dance, meditation and psychological and somatic work has informed my adult life and been my deepest fascination. How do we evolve as human beings? That is a powerful question and one that I find necessary to explore. All my dance work centers around connection and relationship, awareness, presence, the capacity to witness, wholeness and always, the body. I have reverence and love for the body, all bodies. These bodies are our teachers. Sometimes the lessons my body teaches me are ecstatic and sometimes, very painful. The work for me has been to say, “Ok, I am here and I am listening, what now?”
In my Open Floor work, I teach a large variety of workshops, among them: Encounter Fundamentals, Libido Fundamentals, and the Aldermarsh yearly residential, on Whidbey Island, WA. I have been very involved in Therapy in Motion, which is a training module for therapists who are also Open Floor teachers. Therapy in Motion’s combination of therapeutic approaches blended with somatic and movement work is incredibly healing and effective.
