Art in Motion

Creativity is our birthright, as basic as walking, talking and thinking. Every human life contains its seeds, whether we're building a sand castle, preparing Sunday dinner, painting a canvas, walking through the woods, or programming a computer. The creative process, like a spiritual journey, is intuitive, non linear and experiential. It points us towards our essential nature, which is a reflection of the boundless creativity of the universe. - John Daido Loori

Essential Streams of Creative Intelligence

Whenever we dance, we build the muscles of Creative Intelligence. To be intelligent in this way serves not only the artistry within us, but offers profound skills for navigating our day to day relational world. It’s a path towards intimacy, raw aliveness, authenticity, vulnerability and sudden attacks of transcendence.  Art in Motion (AIM) is a collection of workshops that use art to access our creative intelligence. Each AIM program is a treasure trove of techniques, tools and insights that point us towards life as a creative process.

Through dance, writing, theater and visual art making, we create our own choreography, write piles of poems, take off and put on masks that help us speak our truth, and make marks that illuminate the artist within. We lean into opening the creative process, not just creating works of art.

What are the hallmarks of Creative Intelligence?  The ability to:

  • Look for the unanswered questions and head towards unknown destinations with curiosity.
  • Tolerate chaos, discomfort and confusion, trusting that new possibilities will appear.
  • Navigate between the Creator and the Critic within ourselves, with respect and compassion for both.
  • Laugh at mistakes and messes – at least sometimes.
  • Sift through the debris of inevitable failures to search for nuggets of gold.
  • Zoom in and out, from the tinest detail to the most vast.
  • Daydream on purpose. Shift between effort and surrender
  • Ability to show our work whether rough or polished.
  • Value the process enough to stay with the work that may remain unfinished and no other eyes may ever see.
  • The ability to know that everything is a remix and everyone is unique, to be able to know and name your sources and influences. Imitation is how we can discover our true originality.

Creativity is a force of our nature, as natural as breathing. We each possess a license to create that is irrevocable. It points us towards our essential nature which is vast, unique, and universal.
